- Woke up before sunrise and went outside to see what the sky was like on January 1st. We were visiting my aunt in DeKalb. There were some nice clouds for a decent sunrise shot, so I grabbed the camera and looked for a good, clean distant horizon. This location looking to the east across a large corn field was less than a quarter mile away. Took several spaced a couple minutes apart as the sun neared the horizon. My timing on the colors as they change is not all that great and timing is everything on a sunrise or sunset. The horizon is deliberately placed along the lower one-third dividing line and the exposure set for the sky leaving the horizon a pure silhouette. Aimed just off from where the sun would break the horizon as the colors were more interesting slightly off-axis. This made setting exposure a bit easier also.
