- Part of an ongoing project photographing Indiana life along the The Old National Road. Before the U.S. Highway system was established, the U.S. designated The Old National Road (Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois) as part of the National Coast-to-Coast Scenic Trails Highway. To mark this highway, a series of these markers were created by the Daughters of the American Revolution, one for each state through which the road passed. A good portion of this highway eventually became U.S. Highway 40. Indiana's marker is in a large park along U.S. 40 in Richmond, Indiana, very near the original location of Indiana's first toll gate for The Old National Road.
